The Interviewer: Ahmed Elmasry

Interview with Erik Peterson of logocritiques.com With over 10 years of experience as a professional graphic designer, Erik Peterson decided to start his own website project logocritiques.com to help logo designers create better logos and brands by offering to give free critiques.

I had the chance to interview Erik chatting about LogoCritiques.com. let's get into the interview..

Hello Erik, thanks for giving Querier.net the chance to interview you, Please tell our readers a bit about yourself.

I was born in the Chicago suburbs and attended college at a small private school called Judson College (now Judson University). I graduated in 1998 with a BS in Visual Communications. Currently I write the LogoCritiques blog and run my own design & consulting business. I have over 10 years experience as a professional graphic designer. Prior to owning my own business I worked in agencies and in-house design departments designing identities, brochures, websites and various other marketing and branding materials. I have won numerous awards, over the years, for the work I have done for my clients.

What is logocritiques.com? and why did you start it?

LogoCritiques.com was created to help logo designers create better logos and brands by offering to give free critiques. I believe that, through constructive feedback, design can often be improved. Sometimes the truth hurts a little, but if it’s honest, it’ll likely make you a better designer.

I was inspired to create the blog when I came across some particularly bad logos one afternoon while searching the web.

What is your logo design process?

Here's a brief synopsis of how I work: I like to start by gathering as much information about the client’s company as possible. Once I have the information, I spend some time reviewing it and absorbing, researching etc. From there I usually end up with a piece of paper and pencil to start concepting and sketching out ideas. A lot of times I jot down phrases and words that describe the company as I go through this sketching process. These word and phrases then act as triggers for me as I try and develop ideas for the new logo. From there I go to the computer and start to work out my ideas on screen. After I have several ideas, I begin to narrow them down and refine them a bit further before choosing about three to present to the client. I try to have as much variety in the concepts as possible at this point.

How do you see logocritiques in the next years?

I hope that I can help and inspire designers by offering free critiques on the site.  But the reality is that at this point the site is a bit of a trial. It's hard to know how much desire there is out there for a concept such as this. If the site goes well and users get benefits from the site it will continue for many years to come.

What are the challenges that may face logocritiques?

Right now, it’s just about getting the blog off the ground and generating content, participants and readers.

What is in general your advice to logo designers?

Always keep your target audience audience in mind. Make your logo distinct, simple, functional and graphic.
